WORLD HEPATITIS DAY ELIMINATE HEPATITIS

The World Hepatitis Day is observed on 28 July every year to bring the world together under one single theme to bring awareness of the global burden of the deadly viral hepatitis and to influence real change.

At the 69th World Health Assembly held in Geneva, 194 governments adopted WHO’s Global Strategy on Viral Hepatitis, which includes a goal of eliminating hepatitis B and C in the next 13 years. The community responded by launching NOhep, the first ever global movement to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

So this year TCV School Chauntra under the direction of the Department of Health (CTA) Central Tibetan Administration and our school’s Health Committee carried out the following activities to make this day a meaningful & educative and informative to everyone. As the children below class 8 were having their exams, the 9 and 10 students could only participate in them. The activities were Art and Essay competition and a short distance marathon. The junior students were also made aware of the day and its significance by putting up posters around the school corridors. They were access to the information from these display charts and the slogans.

Choekhor Duechen

‘Choekhor Duechen’ in Tibetan is the festival of ‘Turning the Wheel of Dharma’ is one of the four major Buddhist holidays. It occurs on the fourth day of the sixth Tibetan lunar month. This was when Buddha after attaining his enlightenment, he turned the Wheel of Dharma and preached his sermon for the first time, at Sarnath, Varanasi (India) by teaching the ‘Four Noble Truths’.

So here in our school we commemorated the event with a grand (SOL-TSOG) offering to Buddha acknowledging his kindness to have turned the Wheel of Dharma to protect all sentient beings from delusions and sufferings. This grand religious ritual was organized by our school Cultural Committee and children above class 7 and the staff members participated in it.

ANIMAL (DOG) CARE CLUB, TCV SCHOOL CHAUNTRA

“Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures.”

As quoted above, His Holiness always says that we need to care and have concern for others’ well being as we care for ourselves. Parallel to this here in TCV Chauntra we have a very special committee called ‘Dog Care Club’ who looks after the stray dogs in the school. It is one of the oldest clubs in our school lead by Mrs. Tenzin Dolker, our senior Science teacher. It has been more than a decade since she has been looking after the dogs in our school premises. She takes the main charge and the responsibility and she is backed by some of our students who volunteer to help her in this mission. The task they perform is extremely commendable and is not everyone’s cup of tea. They risk their own safety to create a healthy and disease free environment for others.

Here are some of the things they do beside their daily chores

to vaccinate the dogs against rabies, parvo-virus.

to treat dogs from both ecto-parasitic and endo-parasitic infection

to sterilize all dogs in and around our school campus

So on 13 July 2017 with the collaboration of our school and the Tibet Charity, Dharamsala, a veterinarian accompanied by two of his assistants vaccinated and sterilized all the stray dogs in and around our school premises so that the school remain safe and healthy from animal diseases.

We express our gratitude to the whole team for creating such a safe and sound environment for all of us residing here. We truly appreciate your selfless act and generosity towards these innocent creatures. Hats off!

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Birthday

On 6th July 2017, we celebrated one of the most blissful days of the year as it is the born day of our beloved His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. We started this auspicious day with a gathering of staff and students above class VII for Sangsol (incense burning) prayer.

The programme started at 8:00 and the actual function started at 9 am with a lighting of butter lamp by our school Principal, Mr. Passang Tsering la and offering of white scarf by the whole staff for His Holiness portrait.  The school Principal delivered the introductory speech. . He talked about the life history of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and his blessing to the whole world.

After that, the highlight of the event was the inauguration and the launch of the TCV School Chauntra’s LOTER NEWS which is to inform about the activities hot happenings in and around the school.  This month we brought the news in Tibetan and hopefully in the near future we would be able to alternate it with English. It’s a monthly news edition.

The ‘Readers of Dalai Lama’ is yet another programme which is going around in the school for whole year. This year, more than 100 students have participated in it and read different books of His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama. Some of the students did PowerPoint presentation on the books they have read and what they understood from it.  

The morning programmed ended with the vote of thanks speech by our school Headmaster Mr. Karma Tashi la. Overall it was a meaningful and time worth spent event.

The afternoon programmed started at 2:45 pm with a soccer tournament between Staff team and School Students’ team. The game ended with the victory of the School Student team with a score of 3 and 4 respectively.

INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING

By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

So building on the success of last year, the theme for 2017 is: “Listen First – Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe.” It is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science and is thus an effective investment in the well being of children and youth, their families and their communities.

Therefore today during the morning assembly, the school’s Health Committee led by our Head Nurse, Mrs. Sonam Sangmo gave a talk with the power point presentation to bring awareness among our children about the harmful effects and the consequences of indulging in drug or substance abuse. The talk began with the introduction of this year’s theme and the related issues.

It was educative and informative for the children to think and avoid from involving and indulging in such disastrous activity.

Dolma Tsedon ( A night long prayer session )

Every year the Cultural Committee of the school organizes some important prayers in the school and one among them is the night long prayer session of the Goddess Tara. Tara, who Tibetans call ‘Dolma’ is commonly thought to be a Bodhisttva or Buddha of compassion and action, a protector who comes to our aid to relieve us of physical, emotional and spiritual suffering.

Tara has 21 major forms, each of which has different color and spiritual attribute. Of these 21 forms, two are especially popular among Tibetan people & White Tara, who is associated with compassion and long life, and Green Tara, who is associated with enlightened activity and abundance.

So here in school we try to impart holistic education to our children. We are not only concerned about the children’s modern education but we also try to connect them spiritually. So this is one particular activity where the prayer starts from 7 p.m. in the evening and lasts till 6 a.m. the next morning in the school hall. The staff and children have 3-5 hours shift to complete the whole session.

The main aims and objectives of holding such prayer is

for long and healthy life of His Holiness the 14th  Dalai Lama

to save and protect ourselves from disease, fear, anxiety, suffering, disasters, troubles and negative karmas.

to overcome mental, physical and emotional blockages and also blockages in relationships.

SUMMER FETE

The school organizes two Fetes in a year & one in spring and one in summer. The summer fete is yet again one of the most awaited events held in the month of June when school reopens for a fresh start right after the summer break. So this year too we had our school’s summer fete on Friday, 23 June 2017. The event is carried forward as same as the spring fete with the full cooperation from both the staff and the students.

Children enjoy and experience new dishes and involve in playing exciting games. The school organized the fete on the large football ground full with different stalls for the children to explore. The income that we receive from this particular event is spent on the school’s Cultural programs and related events.

Such event educates our children to be more self reliant, cooperative and motivate them to become a contributing member of the society. Children learn a lot of things under the guidance of the elders and by observing them.

MATH DAY

Math Day is observed every year in the school to encourage and arouse interest in students to learn Math more. This year also the Math Committee organized different activities to make this day more enthusiastic and memorable for the learners. One among them is a complete new activity this year and it was the ‘Math Extempore’ for the senior classes. Every child had to have the knowledge about the Math terms and related issues. During the real contest, the serial numbers of the children were picked randomly and they were made to speak about the topic they got. This aroused excitement and made each and everyone responsible in the learning scenario. Most importantly it provided platform for everyone to speak and showcase their knowledge about Math.

The Junior section Math teachers organized ‘Math Quiz’ for those little children. They were very excited and shown keen interest in learning the subject.

In short the event went successfully well in terms of organization and participation.
